Bougainvillea
Bougainvillea is the city flower of Shenzhen. Its bracts are colorful, vibrant, which only can be compared with the temperate or alpine Rhododendron. Bougainvillea belongs to the family Nyctaginaceae and is native to South America; there are only about 18 wild species, but more than 300 cultivated hybrids. Due to its excellent adaptability, ease of maintenance, beautiful color, and long flowering period, Bougainvillea plants are widely cultivated in the tropical and subtropical regions. Since the 1990s, the Garden has established a nursery and introduced a large number of cultivated varieties. Work on propagation and application has been carried out and has enriched the Bougainvillea diversity of Shenzhen and China. There is an outdoor display of Bougainvillea at the Conservation Center, with more than 30 taxa and hybrids, displaying a vast palette of colors when the plants bloom. From the terrace edge of the multi-storey parking lot to the left of the main entrance, there are bougainvilleas planted in rows. During flowering season, it becomes an impressive scene.
