Scientific research is an important part of the SZBG. At present, the Garden is the only local institution that is carrying out integrated botanical research, in addition to research into horticulture and landscapes. Most of research is carried out by staff of the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Southern Subtropical Plant Diversity (hereinafter referred to as the Key Laboratory) which is affiliated with and situated within the Garden. Scientific research at the Garden involves both basic and applied research. The second platform where research is carried out is the Shenzhen Urban Forest Ecosystem Research Station in Guangdong (hereinafter referred to as Shenzhen Urban Eco-Station) which focuses on the monitoring of urban forest ecosystems, and has been financially supported by the then State Forestry Administration in early 2017, which is the No. 94 station of the Ecological Position & Observation Network Center of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. The third research platform is Shenzhen Research Center of Landscape Architecture which organizes landscape companies, universities and research institutions in related fields to carry out innovation in the landscape and architecture.
