Bromeliaceae
As a diverse group with various ecological habits, more than 2,000 bromeliad species are widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas and the Caribbean. Leaf bases of most species in this family are closely spaced, forming funnel-shaped rosettes of foliage, which are excellent for water absorption and retention. Leaves of bromeliads are often colorful, with bands and stripes and the flowers are usually brightly colored. Common species belong to the genera Aechmea, Billbergia, Cryptanthus, Guzmania, Nidularium, Tillandsia, and Vriesea. SZBG began the introduction of bromeliads in 2012, and currently the Garden cultivates more than 700 taxa. The main nurseries are the Conservation Center and the Shade Garden.
