April is the beginning of the most beautiful season. Let’s enjoy Springtime!

From April 8 to 17, the 2023 Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Greater Bay Area Flower Show (2023 Greater Bay Area Flower Show) was held at Shenzhen Fairy Lake Botanical Garden (SZBG), the main venue, and an additional location at Xiangmihu Flower Wonderland. The theme of the 2023 Show is Flowers and Dreams. The theme flower is the Rhododendrons.

The 2023 Greater Bay Area Flower Show was filled with exhibits from more than 80 well-known horticulture, landscape, and E-commerce companies and universities from home and abroad. At the main venue, there were nine gardens created by the world’s renowned landscape designers, six city gardens constructed by Hong Kong, the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, and the Shenzhen-Shantou Cooperation Zone that highlight urban characteristics, five variety gardens (featuring rhododendrons, coffees, bulbous and perennial plants, hydrangeas, clonal cultivars, and petunias respectively),and a flower field of hope. In addition, you could enjoy two special gardens, and a champion garden featuring college student garden design competition, and twenty container gardens. Always popular among plant-lovers was a horticultural bazaar that brought together 40 domestic and international merchants. At the same time, many activities were held during the show, including academic forums, nature education, and cultural activities, and a camping area. The Xiangmihu Flower Wonderland venue created a colourful and visually striking open-air Rhododendron Flower Gallery and a potted plant garden, and held vibrant and interactive cultural activities such as horticultural bazaar and camping.

The Greater Bay Area Flower Show is an international, professional, and innovative event. It has been held in Shenzhen three times since 2019, attracting hundreds of organizations and more than 1.4 million visitors from home and abroad. In 2022, there were also more than 14 million online visitors.

Rhododendrons
In my spare time, I broke two branches of the flowers and held them in my hands, observing them.
They are too beautiful to be earthly things. It is the beauty Ms XI Shi of the flowers; compared with it, both lotus and peony are ugly.

Every dreamer, with a thought, or a brush in hand, imagines the future. Nine international designers from the United Kingdom, France, Korea, Japan, Australia, and the United States showcase different styles of featured gardens in the Dream-Drawing Blueprint area (Paradise Scenery) and the Dreamy Stage area (Lakeshore Lawn). The romance of a midsummer’s night, the spirit of the Land of Peach Blossoms and Zen, the vitality of fluttering butterflies, the exoticism of a Henna garden, or the balance of city, nature, and people. Gardens, with the most direct sensory expression, indulge people’s senses. They interpret the garden’s dream, build our future dreams, promote green development, and cultivate harmony between humans and nature.

International Gardens

The 2023 Greater Bay Area Flower Show consists of 8 exhibition areas scattered across the Fairy Lake Botanical Garden. This is the third of a series of episodes introducing the show.

To display artistic gardens full of flowers and dreams, six urban gardens were set up at the Dreamy Flower Sea (Bodhi Tree Lawn) based on the terrain, and integrating traditional and modern technologies. They used creative techniques with scientific and technological element and aimed to show advanced gardening and landscape techniques. Diverse trees and flowers were used, presenting plants from an unprecedented perspective. Carry forward the past and forge ahead to create a magnificent sea of flowers for people in pursuit of their dreams.

City Garden Show

Two special gardens located at the Dreamy Stage area (Lakeshore Lawn) and the Gesneriad Garden focus on the art of eco-friendly gardening and special plant group respectively, showing the present and future of the harmonious coexistence of man and nature in both novel and pleasing form. Urban gardens are not only an excellent place for the public to get close to nature and understand it, but also can become a vivid practice of ecological civilization ideas.

The Welcoming Flower Borders are like works of art, giving full play to their role as a connecting link. They are full of the designers’ ingenious ideas and delicate thoughts, giving visitors an unexpected touching harvest and moved emotions. During the flower show, in the area near the main entrance of Fairy Lake Botanical Garden and the Mid-level Pavilion, we combine each node’s architecture and topography with different gardening techniques, carefully matching various plants and distinct components to create a warm and festive atmosphere, which also gives visitors a step-by-step surprise.

More than 40 brand businesses from the US, the UK, Japan, Russia, China, and others are gathered in the Horticulture Bazaar to create a high-level dining setting and show gardens of various styles. Through the online and offline linkage mode, it promotes the communication and integration of the up-and-downstream of the gardening industry chain. It creates a one-stop-setting business model which supplies brand enterprises, gardening tools, and life settings. It gathers innovative global ideas and displays garden dreams from many angles so everyone can bring life-enriching aesthetics home with their own plant choice! With green plants to open their imagination, with flowers to feel the romance, prolong springtime, and encounter beauty.

Horticulture Bazaar

The 2023 Greater Bay Area Flower Show organized the 2023 College Student Garden Design Competition. A total of 111 teams from 42 universities submitted their design works. Eight of the most outstanding entries are introduced as follows. Only one garden entitle “Spring Blossoms, Dreams Come True” was set up at the Crape Myrtle Collection. While cleverly using design techniques, the selected teams focused on the theme of the flower show, Flowers and Dreams, aiming to create an inclusive and blooming dream garden. The exhibits express a beautiful vision of future development of the Greater Bay Area.

Situated at the Palm Garden and the Bamboo Garden, the camp is a big garden where you can look forward to unknown encounters, feel the blossoming of life, experience the fun of parent-child interactions, and paint the living habitats of water and mountains. Away from the busy and noisy city, you have close contact with nature here to ease your tensions, have fun, hear the delightful voices of children, and begin a new, more relaxed lifestyle. This camp helps us to carry out a series of interactive activities, teaching us to enjoy intimate dependency at a good time. In the satisfying life of the camp, you can rebuild your spirit, restore your strength, and sail out again.

Roundabout
A garden can be a place to rest and reboot - to escape from busy city life. This garden is designed in a naturalistic style and is composed of rich plant material. The sound of running water is central, and seating will provide a soothing opportunity to relax from your busy life. The circular pavement extends from the fountain, constructed of recycled tiles to tell a story with history, while tall trees surround visitors in a secluded space. Refractory steel walls of different heights are matched with concrete to form an independent scene, casting a sharp contrast between the shadows and the plants. The curving walls create a sense of isolation and allow people to rest in a bustling urban environment.

The Cabin
The biophilia hypothesis suggests that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature. This garden explores that connection with a picture of sanctuary and escapism in a woodland setting. A minimalist cabin or pergola nestles in the heart of the garden, at one with the densely planted surrounding trees. The steel fabric has an almost natural beauty that helps the structure sit lightly in the landscape while providing sharp, impactful lines of architecture. Mesh walkways seem to hover over the planting, encouraging visitors to want to explore the intriguing route, diffusing hard and soft landscapes, while continually contemplating our relationship with nature and the impact it has both ways. A series of trees provide a striking vertical structure, dramatically filtering sunlight and offering a dappled canopy overhead. This is a garden built around with an existing woodland. Water flows through the space to animate and excite, adding atmosphere and character. Water catches your eyes, while reflections demand a pause, a time to contemplate and appreciate the beautiful vista through the garden. The Cabin offers hope that we can one day restore the balance between humans and nature.

Finding Balance Through the Urban Lens
This exhibit explores how varying exposure to nature and flowers alters our perception and feelings in enclosed urban spaces. Shadows and reflections are used as a design tool to give a dreamy, otherworldly state-contrasting and softening the hard urban materials used for architectural structures.
The layered framework is designed to simulate the urban architectural complex and experience the inner experience of different environments. The circular reflecting pool reflects the sky and white clouds, brick walls, and plants, integrating them and making the whole space more transparent. Through the building outward, the shadowy effects of tall trees connect us with the realm of plants. The intentional placement of the mirror creates a dream-like experience. The suspended stool enables visitors to appreciate the surrounding plants and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The mirror behind the seat also creates an illusory feeling and makes people feel calm. Living in the city, you can still find a balanced relationship with nature.

Pause
The design concept of the garden is mainly based on the fact that in the modern international metropolis of Shenzhen, people are constantly surrounded by incessantly busy businesses. This can have a tremendous negative impact on people’s life and physical and mental health. The designer hopes people can enjoy a moment of comfort in this garden. There is a meditation spot in the garden where people can cultivate their minds, calm down negative emotions, and experience the natural mystery between human and nature. It can also be a wonderful time with family or friends sitting around the stove, eating, exchanging, and having a wonderful time together. The garden also has waterfalls, lagoons, sculptures, and other highlights. These spaces can lift depressed spirits and soothe the volatile emotions of city dwellers and give them a feeling of relaxation.

Eden to Zen
The garden consists of four parts: Eden Garden, Shin-Sen-Kyo Pond, Zen Garden, and Bamboo Grove, connected by a winding pathway. You can follow the path to see the design styles of Japanese gardens in different periods. The ancient Japanese garden style was influenced by Chinese mythology, such as the Peach Garden celebrated by the famous poet TAO Yuanming (about 365-427) in his Peach Blossom Springs. Zen culture is also profoundly influenced by Chinese mythology and similarly expresses an awe of nature. The various styles of Japanese gardens created in different times, including the Eden Garden, Shin-Sen-Kyo Pond, and the Zen Garden, derive from the same Chinese ideology and culture. China and Japan share similar landscape design concepts, positioning the garden as a “home of the soul.” This is the artistic conception that this garden expresses.

Butterfly Dance
The garden has been designed to show the intrinsic values and substantial potential for the global ecosystem of the mountains of Huangshan (Anhui) and Wutongshan (Shenzhen). The designer uses the butterfly species Luehdorfia chinensis, caterpillars, plants, and endangered Rhododendron species which are essential elements in the food chain and the foundations of the ecosystem. Critical aspects of the design are to visualize the dance of the butterflies, and the flow of the Shenzhen River as a habitat of migratory birds, a vital link between marine and inland ecosystems. The creation of the garden emphasizes zero carbon emissions and sustainable development by using recycled materials such as abandoned containers and second-hand wood from the old shipwreck at Shenzhen harbor. These processes are like an art project and involve relational aesthetics and address the natural potential and diversity of these spectacular mountain habitats.

The Henna Garden
This Garden is a place for healing. It provides not only peace but also an exotic and exquisite place to socialize. The inspiration comes from the designer’s experience of over 20 years working and living in Dubai and the Middle East. The designer hopes to show the dichotomy of traditional culture and modern interpretation. The garden features an artistic theme of hand-painted Henna with Arabic symbols of goodwill and is entered through the Henna Gate at the main entrance. A traditional Middle Eastern canal connects a characteristic water bowl with a gentle flow of water to the Henna landscape wall. The rest area on both sides of the water flow, with the left close to the secondary entrance, represents the social space for men. The more intimate social space surrounds the right for women, which also respects the dichotomy in Middle Eastern culture. The garden demonstrates that even in a desert region like the Middle East, a garden can still be lush with trees and flowers.

Designer: Quintin DAVIDSON

INSIDE but OUTSIDE
To show a natural and private space, the designer sets a double screen in the garden to reflect the sense of enclosing and wrapping. The first screen consists of wooden planters, whose plants form a natural enclosure. The second screen consists of steel building materials, and rhododendrons of different heights are planted inside to form an enclosure. The entrance is comprised of hanging plants and flowers, which give visitors an immersive experience once into the garden. The water element in the garden is a natural pool, like a bathtub in nature, bringing relaxation and peace. Some unique plants purify the pool, and the transparent walls give visitors a delightful experience. Whether facing soil on the ground, organisms in a forest, or buildings in a city, plants can climb up and create a green space. People in this garden can feel the calmness of the natural garden and the vitality of the plants from the outside.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a romantic comedy written by the English dramatist, William Shakespeare. It tells a story about the complexities of love. The well-known play is about young couple in love in ancient Greece. Because of the opposition of the girl’s father, they flee to a forest outside of Athens to be together. They encounter the fairy king and queen of the forest and a series of funny and mesmerizing situations occur. Finally, the fairy king lifts the magic, and everyone finds their love. The designer uses modern artistic expressive techniques to present the story’s background to the visitors and lets everyone immerse themselves in a magical forest full of fantasy.

The Community of Life
On October 12, 2021, Chinese President XI Jinping delivered a keynote speech via video link at the Leaders’ Summit of the 15th Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 15). He remarked: “All things that grow live in harmony and benefit from the interdependence of Nature. Biodiversity makes Earth full of vigor. This vitality lays the foundation for human survival and development.” In November 2022, the world’s first International Mangrove Center was set up in Shenzhen as a global initiative to promote international exchange and cooperation and global action for wetland conservation. Shenzhen is gifted with natural resources as a hub of innovation and technology and a model city for ecological protection. The unique mangrove habitats provide a refuge for a variety of wildlife.
“All things that grow live in harmony and benefit from the interdependence of Nature.” Harmony is the most fundamental basis for the birth and growth of all beings. The Community of Life celebrates Shenzhen’s achievements in balancing economic development and environmental protection, especially the conservation of mangrove wetlands. It is designed to advocate respecting and protecting nature for harmonious coexistence between people and nature. The garden’s principal area is dominated by large mangrove-inspired installations. Sinuous woven screens weave through the planting along the stylized riverbanks with pulsed LED strip lighting at night; the staggered planting reflected on the tranquil and sparkling water fully manifests the creativity, vitality and enthusiasm of Shenzhen, the city of dreams.
By emphasizing the concept of sustainable design and development, the Community of Life hopes to present the harmonious coexistence between people and nature, and highlight Shenzhen's vibrancy in green and sustainable development.

A heritage of Historical Features - Happy Chengdu in Hustle and Bustle
Although Chengdu, “the land of abundance” has experienced ups and downs throughout its long history, people there have always kept an optimistic and leisurely way of living, as is evidenced by smiling pottery figurines made one thousand years ago. The local Bashu Garden is tranquil, beautiful, and graceful in appearance while unconstrained and ethereal in spirit. As time flies, people in Chengdu nowadays are still captivated by nature as they inherit open-mindedness from their ancestors. The three characteristics, namely, “a smile” as the humanistic expression of the city, “leisure” as the everyday lifestyle, and “positiveness” as the city’s spiritual core, endow Chengdu with a unique glamour. With the continuous construction of the garden city, the name card--“Happy Chengdu in the hustle and bustle” is bound to be everlasting.
The design focuses on the utilization of diversified plants, includes aquatic plants, hygrophytes, mesophytes, arbor, shrubs, vines, bamboo, perennial flowers and annual flowers. Furthermore, appropriate environment for these plants is built according to their original habits, with affiliated structures that meet functional needs and theme expression.
Taking heritage as its cue, this garden aims to show the humanistic characteristic of Chengdu. It was developed from the Arcadian life of ancient times, thousands of years ago. It can also be felt today, in happy and abundant Chengdu, as garden city construction moves forward, and the ecological characteristics are preserved.

Building Dreams at the Garden of Eden
The flowers in late spring have fallen, but rhododendrons in Eden are in full bloom. The Garden of Eden is based on the landscape of Hengqin, to build a beautiful living environment of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Mountains, forests, lakes, and seas have always been the best scenery: the gentle breeze blows on the face, and the shadow of moonlight follows. Gazing from the moon gate, one can see flying egrets and hawks, leaping fish, and harmonious singing birds. Strolling around the garden, the path returns, and the breeze touches your face. You can enjoy the flowing streams, the verdant woods, and the fragrance of flowers. The “Garden of Eden” hopes to reflect the ecological and cultural pattern of Hengqin, which combine biodiversity, diverse culture, inclusiveness, and deep integration between Hengqin and Macao.

The Charm of Vulnerability: A Gesneriad Show
This exhibition displays more than 100 native species of Gesneriaceae collected and conserved by the Fairy Lake Botanical Garden. The plants of the genera Primulina and Petrocosmea, including the second-class national protected species, Primulina tabacum and Petrocosmea qinlingensis, dominate the exhibit. Gesneriad micro-landscape activities will be held during the show.
Chinese gesneriads are mainly distributed in shady and wet places in karst landscapes, under dense forests, or at the entrances to caves. Due to the vulnerable habitats, most species of Gesneriaceae are endangered. It is hoped that this exhibition can spread knowledge about Gesneriaceae and promote the conservation and preservation of the diversity of Gesneriaceae. The exhibition aims to arouse the public’s awareness and to protect gesneriads and their vulnerable habitats.
The garden is located at the Gesneriad Garden.

The Zero-Carbon Garden
The garden consists of three parts: seeking, symbiosis, and circulation. The “Benjeshecken” forms the ecological path through the garden. Its double-loop eco-trail system symbolizes the Möbius ring of perpetual circulation. People can explore the garden by walking on the eco-trail, built with slag bricks (a by-product of trash incineration). By reaching the rainforest life tower step by step, where birds sing, flowers bloom, and all things live together, people can feel natural energy flow between lives and experience all things constructed by carbon-based life.
The shape and texture of the “Life Dome” structure are abstracted from the project, SE Environment Longgang Energy Ecological Park, a subsidiary of Shenzhen Energy Group, which has been selected for the national super engineering archives, and won the “National Quality Engineering Award Gold Award.” Design and operation there has embraced the concept of low-carbon emission, and demonstrates eco-friendly design and symbiosis. They have the world’s most stringent environmental standards, the best emission indicators, and the most robust emission reduction capacity. SE Environment Longgang Energy Ecological Park has become Shenzhen’s benchmark of ecological implementation.
The garden is located at the Dreamy Stage area (Lakeshore Lawn).

Dream Gift Box
The Dream Gift Box consists of the flower border around the flying fairy sculpture at the main entrance and the olive-shaped green space “gift garden” adjacent to the east side of the entrance. The entrance node is based on triangular, circular, and other geometric golden structures, and includes a three-dimensional art installation in high or low and a “Plant Gift Box.” It celebrates a form of infinite division and includes plants gathered from several continents, symbolizing that flowers are used to carry dreams, and dreams are blooming in the world. The “Gift Garden” on the west side, as the continuation of the flower border at front of the entrance, also uses triangular and circular geometric structures as decorative elements. However, the layout of planting is more scattered and free. It looks like flying silk from above, symbolizing colorful and soaring dreams.

Spring Blossoms, Dreams Come True
“You are a Shenzhener once you come here!” The largest immigrant city in China, Shenzhen, is where numerous people begin their dreams. These are people from all walks of life, these are ordinary people. One person’s dream is small, but everyone’s dream comes together and has the power to change. Because of this, Shenzhen has achieved many breakthroughs in different fields, and jointly built a miracle of the “Shenzhen Dream.” So we think everyone’s dreams deserve to be heard, and we hope to design a garden that unites everyone’s dreams. The garden design is shaped by the azalea, with the pentagon as the design motif. Sound listening devices are placed in the garden to increase the hearing experience, and people can hear other people’s dreams in Shenzhen. Finally, it forms an auditory garden with the dream installation as the center and the sea of azaleas as the main scenery.

Container Garden Show

The Container Garden is a miniature landscape formed by single or multiple ornamental plants in a container. It has been a more popular miniature garden trend in recent years. As its advantages include less space occupied by a single unit, small cost, convenient construction, diverse forms, and reusable.

Several container garden schemes are selected through competitions. Four types of applications are displayed throughout different flower exhibition areas: Door & Courtyard Decoration (Outdoor Planter, Commercial Displays, Window Displays, Garden & Patio), Windowsill & Balcony Decoration, Street & Park Green Space, and Interior Decorations. The purpose is to provide a reference for applying container gardens in the landscaping of various green spaces and to promote the novel and “movable” container gardens to the general public.
